This organically farmed red from Puglia is full of ripe dark fruit, with soft tannins and a hint of toasted vanilla. Rich, smooth and easy to drink, it's a great choice for relaxed dinners, cosy nights in or sharing with friends. Its consistently strong Vivino ratings show why it's become such a popular favourite.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

The Profile:

A deep ruby red in the glass, bursting with generous aromas of ripe black plum, cherry jam, and dried figs, layered with subtle notes of cocoa, vanilla, and sweet spice. The palate is broad and smooth, offering plush dark-berry fruit held together by soft, rounded tannins and a warm, lingering finish.

Classic Pairings:

Slow-cooked beef ragù over pappardelle, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, or a board of sharp, aged cheeses like Pecorino or Gouda

Irish Favourite Pairings

  • Beef & Guinness Pie: The rich beef and Guinness gravy pair perfectly with the wine's ripe black fruit and hints of dark chocolate, while the meat softens the tannins for a smooth finish.
  • Spice Bag with Curry Sauce: The wine's ripe fruit helps balance the spice, while its freshness cuts through the rich curry sauce.
  • Cheddar & Honey-Glazed Ham Toastie: Mature cheddar softens the tannins, while the wine's blackberry fruit and subtle sweetness work beautifully with the honey-glazed ham.

Awards & Accolades

Official Awards: Consistently decorated at world-class competitions, earning Gold Medals at both Mundus Vini and the Asia Wine Trophy, along with 93 Points from Luca Maroni.

Vivino Recognition: Boasts a stellar community rating across thousands of reviews, placing it firmly in the Top 5% of all wines worldwide and among the highest-rated Primitivo di Manduria bottles globally.

How the wine is made

Crafted exclusively from 100% hand-picked Primitivo grapes sourced from historic, low-yielding vineyards in Contrada Papale. The fruit undergoes temperature-controlled maceration and fermentation at 26–28°C to extract maximum color, aromatic intensity, and silky structure. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for at least 8 to 10 months in a combination of French oak tonneaux and American oak barriques before resting further in bottle to achieve its signature roundness and spice integration.

Why we love this producer

Varvaglione 1921 is a powerhouse of history, standing proudly as one of the oldest and most respected family wineries in Southern Italy, now spanning four generations. Based in Leporano on the picturesque Gulf of Taranto, the estate is passionately focused on elevating Puglia's native varietals while masterfully blending them with international grapes tailored to modern styles. We love them because they capture the warm, ancient soul of Apulian winemaking and wrap it in a clean, beautifully accessible, and incredibly forward-thinking package.

Sustainability & Farming Practices

Varvaglione focuses heavily on low-impact, sustainable agriculture across their historic Salento holdings. The estate utilizes natural methods to foster biodiversity in the soil, relying on carefully timed hand-management and defensive cover crops to preserve natural water table moisture and protect the vineyard from erosion under the intense Southern Italian sun.
