A standout South African Pinotage, this is a rich and velvety red with flavours of dark berries, espresso, chocolate and warming spice. Made by Bertus Fourie, one of the pioneers of the “Coffee Pinotage” style, it combines ripe fruit with a smooth, generous finish. A highly rated favourite on Vivino, it’s perfect for hearty meals, relaxed nights in and lovers of bold, full-flavoured reds.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

The Profile:

A deep ruby red pouring with rich violet glints, bursting with bold aromas of dark cocoa, roasted coffee beans, maraschino cherry, and toasted oak. On the palate, it is supple, smooth, and opulent, delivering layers of ripe mulberry, dark plum, and sweet vanilla framed by velvety tannins and a long, mocha-infused finish.

Classic Pairings:

Slow-roasted pork belly with a savory glaze, grilled venison loin, barbecue beef short ribs, or rich blue cheese like Gorgonzola.

Irish Favourite Pairings:

  • Classic Irish Ham & Cheese Toastie: The wine’s smooth tannins and subtle espresso notes balance the richness of melted cheddar and buttery bread, while complementing the smoky flavour of the ham.
  • Irish Bacon and Cabbage with Parsley Sauce: The wine’s ripe plum fruit and dark chocolate notes create a delicious contrast with the salty gammon and creamy sauce.
  • Irish Black Pudding & Apple Tartlets: The savoury, earthy flavours of black pudding pair beautifully with the wine’s coffee and oak notes, while the baked apple brings out its ripe berry character.

Awards & Accolades

Official Awards:  Widely celebrated as a groundbreaking benchmark for South African wine innovation, routinely scoring 90+ points across international wine guides and taking top honours at the Cape Town RMB WineX.

Vivino: Holds an outstanding 4.1 average rating across thousands of reviews, placing it securely in the Top 5% of all Pinotage wines in the world on Vivino.

How the wine is made

Masterminded by winemaker Bertus Fourie (affectionately known in SA winemaking as "Starbucks"), using 100% Pinotage grapes harvested at peak maturity from select vineyards in Robertson and the Western Cape. The juice undergoes controlled tank fermentation alongside a specialized yeast strain and precise, heavy-toast French oak barrel aging. This tailored "Barista House Toast" oak treatment interacts naturally with the Pinotage grape's unique compounds during fermentation, unleashing intense aromas of dark coffee and chocolate without any artificial additives.

Why we love this producer

Created in partnership with Val de Vie Estate in Paarl, Barista was founded with the explicit mission to demystify wine and make it fun, expressive, and accessible to everyone. Winemaker Bertus Fourie pioneered this distinctive coffee-styled Pinotage style, turning a serendipitous cellar discovery into a global phenomenon. We love them because they take a notoriously challenging native South African grape and transform it into a dangerously smooth, hedonistic bottle that bridges the world of fine coffee and great wine.

Sustainability & Farming Practices

Certifications: Produced under the Integrity & Sustainability Certified South Africa scheme (IPW), guaranteeing eco-friendly cellar practices and traceable vineyard sourcing.

Vineyard Practices: The estate focuses on sustainable dryland farming methods where possible, careful canopy management to reduce water reliance, integrated pest control, and energy-conscious cellar production.
