This is a brilliantly vibrant, modern Australian red that brings together the rich plum flavours of Shiraz with the savoury, rustic spice of Spanish Tempranillo. Offering a medium-bodied, juicy, and highly food-friendly style, it is the ultimate crowd-pleaser for any mid-week dinner or weekend gathering. Scoring comfortably in the top 10% of all wines globally on Vivino, it delivers exceptional value and a deliciously fresh, easy-drinking perspective on Clare Valley reds.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

The Profile: A lively nose of dark cherries, ripe plums, and savoury dried herbs, leading into a juicy palate of black fruits, sarsaparilla, and subtle milk chocolate, all framed by soft, dusty tannins and a bright, refreshing finish.

Classic Pairings:

Tapas-style chorizo cooked in red wine, wood-fired Margherita pizza, or a platter of medium-aged Manchego cheese.

Irish Favourite Pairings

Clonakilty Black Pudding: The earthy, peppery spice of the pudding is a brilliant match for the rustic Tempranillo grapes, while the rich texture naturally softens the wine's tannins.

Irish Pork Sausage Rolls: The wine’s bright acidity cuts cleanly through the buttery, flaky pastry, while the juicy plum and cherry flavors beautifully complement the savory pork.

Ham and Cheese Toastie: A classic quick comfort. The fat from the melted cheddar instantly rounds out the wine's structure, while the Shiraz's ripe fruit flavors elevate the salty ham.

How the wine is made

This clever blend brings together Shiraz and Tempranillo grapes sourced from estate vineyards in the cool Polish Hill River subregion of the Clare Valley. The fruit is harvested at peak freshness and fermented separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve the bright, primary fruit characters. A short maturation period in seasoned French and American oak barrels allows the blend to develop its soft, approachable structure without being overpowered by heavy wood influences.

Why we love this producer

Pikes is an icon of the Clare Valley, boasting a family heritage that dates back to 1886 when the family first began brewing beer in South Australia. In 1984, brothers Andrew and Neil Pike pivoted the family's passion toward premium viticulture, choosing the unique, ancient slate soils of the Polish Hill River to craft world-class wines. Today, still proudly family-owned and operated, Pikes represents the absolute pinnacle of dry Australian Riesling—driven by an unwavering commitment to quality, place, and character.

Sustainability & Farming Practices

Vineyard Practices: Pikes employs an impressive array of green practices. They recycle 100% of their winery wastewater and solid grape skins/stalks into compost for the vineyards, while a 99-kilowatt rooftop solar array generates roughly 30% of their electricity. Andrew Pike actively leads local wetland re-vegetation efforts, and chemical use is kept to an absolute minimum by utilizing straw mulching and cover crops to preserve natural soil moisture and biodiversity.
