Montepulciano D'Abruzzo

A beautifully crafted organic Montepulciano from the Abruzzo hills, this is a rich and approachable red with plenty of character. Ripe black plum, dark cherry and subtle cocoa flavours combine with smooth tannins to create a wine that feels generous without being heavy. With consistently strong Vivino ratings, it’s a crowd-pleasing choice for everything from casual dinners to special occasions.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

The Profile:

A vibrant ruby red with purple glints, revealing inviting aromas of jammy blackberry, wild dark plum, and red cherries with underlying hints of earth, cocoa, and subtle spice. The palate is rich, soft, and beautifully balanced, bringing deep dark berry flavors framed by smooth, rounded tannins and a fresh, long-lasting finish.

Classic Pairings:

Slow-cooked beef ragù with pappardelle, grilled pork chops with rosemary, wood-fired pepperoni pizza, or aged Pecorino cheese.

Irish Favourite Pairings:

  • Traditional Irish Beef & Stout Stew: The wine’s ripe dark cherry flavours and soft tannins pair beautifully with the tender beef, while its freshness balances the rich, malty stout gravy.
  • Spice Bag from the Local Chipper: The wine’s juicy fruit helps soften the salty spice of the crispy chicken and chips, while its smooth texture complements the fried flavours and heat.

Awards & Accolades

Official Awards: Consistently praised across international tastings, earning top marks for its organic purity and balance, including Gold and Silver medals at *Mundus Vini* and *AWC Vienna*.

Vivino: Rated an impressive 4.1 average across thousands of user reviews, placing it solidly in the Top 5% of all Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wines globally on Vivino.

How the wine is made

Sourced from certified organic old vines grown on traditional Abruzzo pergolas perched 290 meters above sea level in the foothills of the Gran Sasso mountain range. The grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and undergo temperature-controlled stainless steel fermentation with extended skin contact for vibrant colour and flavour extraction. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for 6 months in thermo-conditioned concrete vats and is bottled in total absence of oxygen to preserve its pristine dark fruit character and silky mouthfeel.

Why we love this producer

Established originally in 1966 in the heart of Teramo, Torri Cantine has evolved into a boutique estate spanning 60 hectares of pristine, organic vineyards running between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine Mountains. Guided by a commitment to minimal-intervention winemaking and absolute respect for the Abruzzo landscape, they focus on preserving native Italian varieties. We love them because they craft energetic, estate-bottled organic wines that showcase true Italian terroir while staying accessibly priced and utterly delicious.

Sustainability & Farming Practices

Certifications: Certified Organic (EU Organic IT-BIO-009), guaranteeing the vineyards are managed without chemical pesticides, synthetic herbicides, or systemic fungicides.

Vineyard Practices: The estate works in complete harmony with Abruzzo's natural ecosystem, utilizing hand-harvesting, natural cover crops between vine rows to maintain soil health, and minimal sulphur additions during vinification.
