Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

The Profile:

Aromas of passionfruit, grapefruit, lime zest and delicate floral notes lead into a fresh, textured palate. Ripe peach, gooseberry and citrus flavours are balanced by lively acidity and a smooth mineral finish, with extra depth from gentle lees ageing.

Classic Pairings:

Pan-seared scallops with lemon butter, fresh goat’s cheese salad, grilled sea bass, or pea and asparagus risotto.

Irish Favourite Pairings:

  • Dublin Bay Prawns in Garlic & Herb Butter: The wine’s fresh citrus acidity balances the richness of the garlic butter, while its tropical fruit flavours bring out the sweetness of the prawns.
  • Warm Smoked Salmon & Baby Potato Salad: The crisp lime and gooseberry notes cut through the richness of the smoked salmon, while the smooth texture pairs well with buttery potatoes.
  • Chicken & Mushroom Pie: The wine’s refreshing acidity balances the creamy sauce and pastry, keeping the pairing light and enjoyable.

Awards & Accolades

Official Awards: Champion Sauvignon Blanc and Gold Medal winner at the NZ Organic Wine Awards. Also recognised with 4-Star ratings from respected New Zealand wine critics Michael Cooper MW and Sam Kim (Wine Orbit).
Vivino: Rated 4.1/5 by wine lovers on Vivino, ranking among the Top 3% of wines worldwide and Top 3% of Marlborough wines on the platform.

How the wine is made

The grapes are grown in Marlborough’s Rapaura sub-region of the Wairau Valley, known for its stony, free-draining soils and ideal conditions for Sauvignon Blanc. Harvested during the cooler morning hours to protect freshness, the grapes are gently pressed and fermented slowly in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Extended lees contact adds texture and richness while preserving the bright acidity and vibrant fruit flavours that define the wine.

Why we love this producer

Walnut Block is a family-run Marlborough estate founded by brothers Clyde and Nigel Sowman, with a focus on organic farming and producing wines that reflect the character of their vineyards. The estate takes its name from the old walnut tree that stands among the vines, while the Collectables label celebrates New Zealand heritage with its vintage Kiwi stamp design. Their wines combine a strong sense of place with a modern, sustainable approach to winemaking.
